‘Little Avengers’ Assemble To Raise Money For Children’s Hospice

When we were contacted by Julie, Claire & Katie, organisers of this incredible fundraiser, we jumped at the opportunity to help them with the medals for such an amazing cause. We were asked to supply medals to celebrate these little avengers; children from the local area with their superpowers of empathy and kindness who helped the Acorn Children’s Hospice’s residents with their own superpowers of bravery and courage.

On the 31st August, ‘Seth’s Avengers’ ran around their village green, to raise money for Acorn Children’s Hospice who help Seth Reilly with his incredibly rare genetic condition and many other children.

At just one year old, Seth was diagnosed with Alexander Disease (AXD) which left him unable to stand or talk. Claire, Seth’s mother and one of the organisers of this event, wanted to give back to the hospice who has helped her son so much in his life. Whether it be therapeutic activities or crafts, it means that Seth can now communicate using picture cards, noises, body movements and facial expressions.

The medals were awarded to the runners, aptly named ‘Seth’s Avengers’ as they crossed the finish line at Dicken’s Heath Village Green, which they could choose to donate to a child at the hospice. Claire said about the event – “This event is an opportunity to nurture the empathy in our young ones, to acknowledge the invisible achievement of others, share the joy of a win, connect and stand beside fellow hero’s whose effort it is to keep a lifetime.” They “will be donated by the little runners to recognise the courage and strength and resilience that the children at Acorns need, to run a much harder race every single day.”

Medals for Heroes

These medals mean so much to us at EFX too and the promise they have for these little warriors. We think they are all absolute heroes. Seth’s mum added: “Seth is a hero! He may not be able to run a race or climb a tree but he faces his health challenges every day and shows up with resilience and courage despite it all.” An inspiration!

One of the organisers Julie was also astounded to see that on top of the EFX medals, the act of selfless generosity from people who wanted to donate their OWN medals (that they had previously won) to the little runners too. “An incredible and very moving 111 medals were donated from runners, dancers, martial arts etc. They ranged from Children’s football medals to Marathon running medals. It’s hard to convey the gratitude we felt when seeing the children wearing them. They just kept coming and offering whatever help we needed. It’s been a life affirming experience for everyone who’s had a hand in it.”

Dickens Parish Council have been in talks to make this event an annual one in honour of Seth. With their initial target set at £3000, they have smashed that figure and have now managed to raise more than £8500 for Acorn’s Children’s Hospice!! Through their Go fund me page, raffle and generous business donations. “Seth’s Avengers will assemble again, I’m sure of it, we now have a trove of medals that need new homes as more were donated than children received!”
